Congratulations on being asked to be a godparent or Confirmation sponsor! The Role of a Sponsor – A Call to Integrity-A Message from Father Brandt, Pastor Dear Godparent/Sponsor, The role of Godparent at Baptism or Sponsor at Confirmation is more than ceremonial. Often in the past, some would say that the Church had this or that requirement. The first question is not whether or not the Church will permit me to be a Godparent or Sponsor, but whether or not I can allow MYSELF to be one! In other words, each one of us must ask himself or herself if our own integrity allows us to stand at the Altar and make a public profession that the faith we will speak in word is also the faith we practice! The role of Godparent and/or Sponsor does not demand that you can be a canonized saint. All of us must place ourselves at the mercy of God. We all have miles to go in Christian progress, yet we also know that members of families, who have stopped attending Mass or who rarely receive the Sacraments, suddenly find themselves asked to be a Godparent or Sponsor. If you are in a similar situation, we invite you to let this moment be a real opportunity to grow in the Spirit and in your faith. You could choose to make the signing of this form a real grace of change, a moment of re-commitment. You could resolve to sit down with a Priest, Deacon, member of our Pastoral Staff or a practicing Catholic and chart a new path in your faith. Be not afraid! Perhaps, you are not ready for this. If you cannot bring yourself to a renewed practice of faith, then by all means be honest enough to simply ask the relative or friend who asked you to be a Godparent or Sponsor to hold you excused. This is what is meant by a call to integrity and honesty. Whatever you discern, do so by the grace of God. If we can be of any assistance in your discernment or in nurturing the grace that this occasion provides for you, please give us a call. It will be a joy to walk this step with you. Thank you for your consideration, thoughts and prayers in arriving at a response to this call to integrity. Sincerely, (Rev.) Paul C. Brandt Pastor
How to request a letter of eligibility
After reading the above message from the Pastor, please email Shawn Marie Brown, Director of Parish Services at [email protected], and inquire what is needed for you to obtain a Letter of Eligibility. The email should include your full name, the name of the person receiving the Sacrament, and indicate if you are a godparent or Confirmation sponsor.Anyone asking for a Letter of Eligibility must be registered in the Parish. Registration forms are in the Church in the information rack in the hallway where the restrooms are located. If you are newly registered or perhaps your Mass attendance has not been so steady, before the Letter of Eligibility can be signed by a Priest or Deacon, the Pastor asks that you use four Sponsor Verification coupons. Each time you attend Mass, you give a coupon to a Priest or Deacon after Mass. The coupons are a way of the Pastor seeing that you are serious in your intent to abide by the form you are signing that you are a Catholic in good standing, with all Sacraments and attending Mass regularly. It is hard for us to tell if someone is attending Mass as there are thousands of parishioners and just one Pastor. Without using Sunday envelopes, we cannot tell if you attend. The amount does not matter, we record $0 envelopes as a way of knowing the person attends for situations such as this. If you feel you have received the coupons in error, mention that to the Priest or Deacon when you give them the first one. After contacting the Director of Parish Services and receiving a reply, the coupons will be in an envelope with your last name, in a basket in the Holy Family Room on the table. The Holy Family Room is in the Church. When you are in the Narthex, go through the double doors on the left. The Holy Family Room is the first room on the left. Once all coupons are completed, the Priest or Deacon will sign your form and you can pick it up.
